Lesson 4 of 28
Understanding the Gospel
Understand the good news about Jesus through five simple truths: God, sin, Christ, response, and new life.
God loves and created us
The gospel begins with God. He made us, loves us, and created us to know Him.
Where to read: Genesis 1–2 and John 3.
John 3:16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Sin separates us from God
Every person has sinned. We cannot rescue ourselves through good works, and sin earns death.
Where to read: Romans 1–3 and Romans 6.
Romans 3:23“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 6:23“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Jesus died and rose for us
God showed His love by sending Jesus. Jesus took the penalty of sin at the cross and rose again.
Where to read: Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15.
Romans 5:8“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
We respond with repentance and faith
The gospel calls us to turn from sin and trust Jesus as Lord. Salvation is received, not earned.
Where to read: Mark 1:15, Romans 10, and Ephesians 2.
Romans 10:9“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
