Lesson 12 of 28
Reading and Understanding Scripture
Develop simple habits for reading the Bible carefully and applying it faithfully.
Ask what it says
Read the whole paragraph, notice repeated words, and identify the people, setting, and main point.
Where to read: Nehemiah 8:1–8.
Nehemiah 8:8“So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.”
Ask what it means
Consider the original setting and compare the passage with the rest of Scripture. Do not pull a verse away from its context.
Where to read: Luke 24:25–27.
Luke 24:27“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Ask how to respond
God’s Word calls us to believe truth, turn from sin, obey commands, and trust God’s promises.
Where to read: James 1:19–25.
James 1:22“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
