Lesson 8 of 28
Baptism and Following Jesus
Understand what baptism means and why believers publicly identify with Jesus.
Baptism follows faith
Baptism does not earn salvation. It is an obedient response by someone who has trusted Jesus.
Where to read: Acts 2:37–41.
Acts 2:38“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.”
A picture of new life
Going under and rising from the water pictures our union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.
Where to read: Romans 6:1–11.
Romans 6:4“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead... even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
A public confession
Baptism tells the church and the world that we belong to Jesus and intend to follow Him.
Where to read: Matthew 28:18–20.
Matthew 28:19“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
